Hartland Landfill Producing Renewable Natural Gas for FortisBC

The Capital Regional District (CRD), working together with FortisBC Energy Inc. (FortisBC) and Waga Energy Canada, has started producing Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) at a new facility located at the Hartland Landfill. The Hartland Landfill RNG facility is Vancouver Island’s first RNG facility.

Originally announced in 2020, the nearly $32 million Hartland Renewable Natural Gas facility, utilizing Waga Energy’s WAGABOX technology, is designed to produce a maximum of 360,000 gigajoules of RNG annually, reducing the capital region’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 475,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next 25 years, the equivalent of removing the total emissions from 105,000 homes in Canada over the facility lifetime.

California Dairy Farms Achieve Major Methane Reduction Milestone

Dairy Cares and the California dairy sector today announced a major milestone in planet-smart dairy farming. This year, the state's dairy farms will achieve an annual reduction of 5 million metric tons of methane (5 MMTCO2e/year). This has been accomplished through on-farm projects to improve manure management and continuous gains in milk production efficiency, as the state's dairy herd continues to shrink.

Anaergia S.r.l. and Capwatt Sign Contract for the First of Nine New Biogas Plants

Anaergia, through its subsidiary, Anaergia S.r.l., entered into a contract with Capwatt Biomethane Unipessoal, Lda. Under the terms of this C$7.3 million contract, Anaergia S.r.l. will design and construct an advanced facility, Metanext. Located in central Italy, Metanext will produce biomethane from agro-industry waste. The facility is expected to be operational by the end of June 2026.

This contract follows the binding Letter of Intent (“LOI”) with Capwatt previously announced on April 21, 2025, for a total of nine projects. These projects, expected to be completed over 30 months, are anticipated to generate a combined total of more than C$60 million in revenue for Anaergia. Anaergia S.r.l. is to oversee the design of each facility, incorporating advanced processes and proprietary systems such as anaerobic digesters, significantly enhancing Europe’s green energy infrastructure and accelerating biomethane production. The Metanext project represents the first of these nine projects.

Veolia Secures $34 Million Contract to Advance Biogas Transformation in San Francisco

Key to the project is Veolia’s state-of-the-art MemGas™ technology, which will convert biogas generated by the plant into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG). Upon completion, the system will produce enough energy to meet natural gas needs equivalent to around 3,800 homes annually, or approximately 68 gigawatt-hours of energy per year. The facility is expected to begin operations by June 2027, supporting local decarbonization goals and showcasing the circular economy in action.

“This project fulfills our commitments for beneficial use of the biogas generated at the Southeast Treatment Plant, supports California’s state goals for in-state production and distribution of renewable natural gas, and aligns with the City’s sustainability objectives,” said Daniela Brandao, Senior Project Manager at SFPUC.

Pennsylvania Dairy Farmers Consider Return on Climate-Smart Milk

At Mountain View Holsteins in Bethel, Pennsylvania, owner Jeremy Martin is always working to make his dairy more efficient. Currently, he has his sights set on a manure solid-liquid separator. He’d like to use the solid portion of his manure as bedding for his 140 cows and the liquid as fertilizer.

But the project is pricey — he expects the equipment alone will run around $100,000. So Martin hopes to defray the cost through grant funding for dairy projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Removing much of the solids from manure reduces the feed for the methane-producing microbes that thrive in the anaerobic conditions of liquid manure.
